Reason® Fungicide label expanded via Minor Use Program to control Phytophthora on ginseng

By: J. Chaput, OMAF and MRA, Minor Use Coordinator, Guelph

The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) recently announced the approval of an URMULE registration for Reason® Fungicide for control of Phytophthora blight and root rot on ginseng in Canada. Reason® Fungicide was already labeled for management of several diseases on vegetables in Canada.

This minor use project was co-sponsored in 2007 by Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada, Pest Management Centre (AAFC-PMC) and U.S. IR-4 as a result of minor use priorities established by growers and extension personnel in both countries. Phytophthora blight and root rot is one of the most serious diseases of ginseng in North America. The minor use label expansion for Reason® Fungicide is an helpful step towards developing an improved disease management toolkit for ginseng in Canada. The following is provided as an abbreviated, general outline only. Users should consult the complete label before using Reason® Fungicide.

Apply Reason® Fungicide at a rate of 600 mL/ha with no more than 3 application per year. Begin applications as soon conditions become favourable for disease. Repeat applications at 8 – 14 day intervals. The Pre-Harvest Interval (PHI) for this product is 14 days.

Reason® Fungicide should be used in an integrated pest management program and in rotation with other management strategies to adequately manage resistance. This product is TOXIC to aquatic organisms. Do not contaminate aquatic habitats when cleaning or rinsing spray equipment or containers.

Follow all other precautions and directions for use on the Reason® Fungicide label carefully.
We also wish to acknowledge the personnel of the Pest Management Regulatory Agency for evaluating and approving this important pest management tool.
