Specialty Crop Sessions at the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Convention

The Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Convention & Trade Show will be held February 18 and 19, at the Scotiabank Convention Centre in Niagara Falls Ontario. The following are the specialty crop-specific sessions being held at the Convention:

Thursday, February 19 at 9:30 am:
Session Title: Get Rich Quick? What You Need to Know before You Grow a Specialty Crop

10:30 am     Pest Management – Melanie Filotas, OMAFRA and Brian Collins, Collins Farm Produce
11:00 am      Grower Panel – Laurie Thatcher-Craig, Remi Van De Slyke and Brian Collins

Thursday, February 19 at 2:00 pm:
Session Title: Specialty Crops II
Chair: Todd Leuty, OMAFRA

2:00 pm      Sweet Chestnut Blight Disease: Developing Resistant Trees – Dragan Galic, University of Guelph
2:30 pm      Sweet Chestnut Production in Michigan – Erin Lizotte, Michigan State University
3:00 pm      Evaluation of Prominent Hazelnut Cultivars in Ontario – Toktam Taghavi, University of Guelph
3:30 pm       Modern Maple Syrup Production: Using Maple Syrup in Unique Value-Added Products – Todd Leuty, OMAFRA

There are many other sessions at OFVC that may be applicable to specialty crop growers covering many fruit and vegetable crops as well as specific sessions on pollinators, spotted-wing drosophila, new business opportunities, farmer’s markets, farm fresh marketing, hort engineering, research updates and organic weed control. There is also the Great Ontario-Hopped Craft Beer Competition and Cider Competitions as well as a large trade show.
